Anyone Can Build the App Now. Knowing What to Build Is the Job.

An AI newsletter promised our notes-app idea live by Sunday. The pitch is real, and that is exactly why building was never the part that mattered.

A daily AI newsletter landed in our inbox this week with a tidy promise: the app idea sitting in your notes, live by Sunday. No computer science degree, no fifteen-thousand-pound developer. The pitch is real. That is exactly what should give brands pause.

When building software stops being the hard part, the hard part becomes deciding what is worth building. For the brands we work with, the constraint was never the idea. It was the distance between the idea and a working thing. That distance is collapsing, and what gets left behind, exposed, is taste.

What actually changed?

The skill barrier to making working software has effectively fallen away. Vibe coding, the term Andrej Karpathy coined in February 2025 for describing an outcome in plain language and letting the model write the code, has gone from a novelty to a normal Tuesday. The Actionable AI's framing is blunt: you do not describe the code, you describe the outcome, and you let it handle the how.

For an ecommerce, hospitality or lifestyle brand, that means the bespoke tools that used to need a dev budget and a three-month queue are now a weekend. A quiz that actually styles a customer. A booking flow shaped to your service rather than the template's. A loyalty mechanic no competitor has, because you invented it on Saturday morning. The build is no longer the wall.

So why doesn't every brand already have a brilliant custom tool?

Because building was never the bottleneck. Judgment was. The newsletter's own throwaway line gives the game away: "your first app will be ugly and it won't matter." For a personal side project, true. For a brand, the ugly version is the brand. The thing customers touch is not a draft, it is the impression.

This is the catch hiding inside the good news. When the floor rises for everyone equally, the floor stops being an advantage. If every store in your category can spin up the same AI chatbot, the same quiz, the same generated landing page, then the artefact itself differentiates nothing. We have seen this film before with AI creative: the output went free, and the judgment got expensive. Software is next.

What should brands actually do with it?

Build the thing only your brand would build. Not the generic assistant every site now bolts on, but the specific, slightly strange, unmistakably-you tool that fits your world and no one else's. The advantage was never going to come from having access to the technology, because access is now universal. It comes from knowing which weird, brand-true idea is worth making real, and having the taste to make it good.

That is a strategy problem dressed as a technology problem. The brands that win the next year will not be the ones who discover they can build. Everyone can build. They will be the ones who know what to.

So yes, that idea in your notes can be live by Sunday. The harder question, the one no model will answer for you, is whether it should be.
